At
the same time I was nurturing
infant Syrah vines that I
planted a few years before at
the vineyard at my home,
Cabernet in Napa Valley was a
proven entity and a wine with a
solid reputation; the opposite
was true with Syrah from the
cool, coastal Russian River
Valley – uncharted territory,
not recommended for planting in
the heart of Pinot Country!
I have been known to be a
rebel through my entire life
and ignoring all the neighbors
about planting Syrah in my
neighborhood was no exception!
They were almost right…they all
said it will never get
ripe…well it almost doesn’t…but
almost is the key word in that
sentence…it doesn’t get
ripe…until Halloween or often
the first week in November but
when it finally reaches that
point it has stashed a thousand
flavors away in its skins!
The Syrah jumps from the
glass with aromas of violets
and ripe boysenberry and
carries the meaty richness thru
to the velvety, plum finish.
