As
many of you may know, Guy has been working in the vineyards
and wineries in the Southern Hemisphere for a number of
years. It started as an opportunity to work 2 harvests each
year--the growing seasons are opposite each other, the
Southern Hemispheres harvests in March/April and
Californias in September/Octoberand it has turned into a
passion to create wines that express a perfect and unique varietal match to the microclimate where the grapes are
grown.
These are wines with distinctive varietal and
local character--a special sense of "thereness"--and we feel
that for these particular varietals, they places produce
grapes and wines that are unrivalled anywhere in the world.
The experience of working
multiple harvests around the world has been phenomenal! The
people and the grapes we work with are some of the best in
the world. In Argentina, all our vineyards are at high
elevations in the foothills of the Andes, where they achieve
amazing ripeness and complexity. In New Zealand, our
Sauvignon Blanc is from some of the oldest vineyards in
Marlborough, the region we have found to be the home of the
best of the best for Sauvignon Blanc. After learning, and
loving the personality of these grapes, our new GUSTO
international label was born in 1999.
Tastings.com has some nice things to say about our
2000 Gusto Vita:
"Brilliant ruby red-violet hue. Intense aromas of
cassis, licorice and leafy notes. A rich entry leads to a
moderately full-bodied palate and a big finish with chewy
fruit, elegant tannins, and a long, long finish. A very
varietally expressive and ageworthy wine.
RATED: 91 points (Exceptional)"
Some of the reviews we
received for the 1999 Gusto Vita:
The Underground
Wine Journal
"Dense appearance of
purple mauve color. The nose has tobacco, blackberry,
currant and leather. Soft attack of ripe blackberry on the
palate with currant and a hint of mint. The flavors are
round and balanced and show good integration. Lingering,
deep, ripe fruit on the long finish with hints of cedar,
mint and cocoa. Good overall balance and integration. This
is an elegant wine." 91 points.
The Wine Spectator
"This fruit driven winner
throws a blast of blackberry, plum and blueberry flavor at
you, then lets the toasty finish take over. Very Good!
Drink
now through 2002". 89 points.
